Daryl Gates

State Secretary

I began collecting for the Good Friday Appeal when we moved to Doncaster with Boys Explorer Club. I was 8 years old.

I had a car accident in 1981 and was unable to work as an electrician, so I worked for my parents business Timewell Products. They made a lot of plastic badges for UBC and brass plates for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

1982 was where I really got to meet Bob Willey who convinced me I should become a member of UBC. Before you know it, I was involved in the collection of Clifton Hill on Good Friday, General Purpose Committee, Good Friday Sub Committee, State Committee and Yarra Valley Branch.

1991 I left Melbourne to go to Queensland to work in the coal mines. Unfortunately, I had an industrial accident so returned to Melbourne to rehabilitate. I still collected for Good Friday for UBC.

2014 I was pleasantly surprised to receive a Life Membership of UBC.
2016 I went back to being State Secretary then had to leave State Committee to assist my ageing mother.

My siblings, daughters, nieces, grandsons and other members of my extended family are all members of UBC and help out when able.

In today’s world we conduct a lot of our meetings on line which has been easier to attend meetings. If you think you could help and become a volunteer Director please consider as it is so easy to attend a meeting from the comfort of your own home.

Since 2000 I was a volunteer of Manningham Men’s Shed until I was offered a position of employment as a Men’s Shed Facilitator. I am still employed there today.
